Wearing denim shorts in the city can be a challenge; it's often difficult to get the right balance between smart and casual. So here are a few things I consider when trying to dress up denim shorts so that they're ready-to-wear in the city.
The sunshine arrived in London yesterday and it seems as though it's set to stay for a while! Whilst out at a few events I was chatting away about the weather and how hard it can be to dress for the heat in the city, which then led to a comment that stuck with me "I can't wear denim shorts in the city". I totally get this and I feel the same. Summer in a city like London feels like a much more dressy affair, especially when you're out and about. So I started to think about how I would wear denim shorts in the city and these are a few things that I consider.
The first is colour. In my opinion, light blue denim always looks more casual so I like to reserve that for festivals and holidays. Instead, I try to choose dark wash denim, black or white for the city. Length is also so important! I constantly struggle with finding shorts that are a good length, I often end up buying shorts that are rolled up and then unstitching them for extra length. That's what I did to these white shorts from River Island. You know the drill by now, I often try to choose between baring my legs or arms when I'm dressing for the warmer weather in the city so I picked a top that covers my arms whilst still being super summery. Plus, it's gingham which seems to be the only print I'm wearing right now! When it's hot I hate feeling overwhelmed with things to carry so I chose a grey crossbody bag from Topshop and backless loafers from Boden which I've been slipping on loads.
