The time has come and my annual summer trip to Portugal is right around the corner, I'm heading off this weekend! I spend every summer in Portugal with my family and have done for the past 24 years (literally my whole life) it's sort of like a family tradition. I'm very fortunate to still be able to spend such a large chunk of my summer abroad and I'm looking forward to jetting off. So I thought I'd put together a blog post chatting a bit about what I have planned for my trip and the next four weeks away!
This year I'm flying out with my boyfriend (who, very conveniently, is also Portuguese and his family is also from northern Portugal so we definitely lucked out with that! Especially considering we both grew up and met in London) we've got some plans up our sleeves already and I'm really excited about them.
Usually, with just shy of four weeks to spend in Portugal, I don't do much planning as we have so much time there but this year I wanted to try and have some plans for the holiday as believe it or not, it goes by so quickly!
We fly in to Porto every year (it's the closest airport for northern Portugal) and we're actually spending 4 days in the city this summer which I'm SO excited about! I booked a last minute *Airbnb to house me, my boyfriend and my parents for the four days. If you're planning any upcoming stays with Airbnb, use my referral link for money off your booking (*link here)! I've got a checklist of where I want to go and what I want to see/do whilst I'm in Porto. Admittedly, I don't think we'll get a lot of sight seeing done because August is a notoriously busy month in Portugal wherever you go. There are a few places I'd like to tick off of my list and I definitely want to spend some time at the nearby beaches too!
Currently I think we'll split up our time equally between sight seeing in the city and some time at the beach - maybe one full day at the beach if the weather is good. Porto is known for its cold water beaches and it can actually be quite windy too, even in the summer.
I'm sure four short days in Porto will go by in a blink of an eye so I'm really hoping to be able to make the most of it and I feel like I can always go back if I want to another time. Whether it be for a day trip this year or for a few days another year.
After that I'm heading to the north! My parents are from a village in northern Portugal in the TrĂ¡s-os-Montes area and so that's where I spend most of my summers. Sadly it's not as glamorous as the beaches everyone imagines when I say I'm heading to Portugal for the summer (I wish it was). My views are of not-so-glamorous fields mostly! We're a small family so I find it quite boring at times but obviously it's great to be able to spend time with my family who are based in Portugal - it's been just over a year since I last visited!
Once I'm there it will be about spending time with family mostly. My auntie and uncle have a pool at their house but they sadly won't be in Portugal over the summer this year. Regardless, I'll definitely be making myself at home by the pool whilst they're stuck in the UK! I'll also spend time staying with my boyfriend and his family too. In a stark contrast to my family, Andre is from a pretty large one and since going out with him I'm pretty sure I've been to at least one wedding or christening every summer with him and his family! This year is no different and we have a wedding to go to mid-August (& I still don't know what to wear!)
I'm not sure what will happen content wise this month, I don't really want to stress about it this year as I've definitely dwelled on it too much in the past. If we go by last year when I shared all my plans for vlogging, weekly blog posts and daily Instagram posts... well, if you followed me a year ago then you'll know what happened but if not, then read my blog post: My Summer In Portugal on Film.
So here's to another year and another summer spent in Portugal. I'll catch up with you when I can!
