A shirt is often my go-to when I'm stuck on what to wear because it always looks good and effortlessly chic. Not only does a shirt always fit the brief (no matter what you're getting dressed for, a shirt will always work with your look), it can also be styled in so many different ways for every single season making it a true wardrobe staple.
Want to look chic in autumn? Wear a shirt.
Need an extra layer for warmth in winter? Wear a shirt.
Want to look put together throughout spring? Wear a shirt.
Need a light layer in the summer? Wear a shirt.
Whether you need to dress smartly for work or an important meeting, or if you're in need of a light layering piece to throw on over your outfit, a shirt is always a good idea. It's the thing I love most about wearing and styling shirts, their versatility.
So when it comes to wearing and styling shirts, I think classic is best. Especially when wearing classic brands like Ralph Lauren, as pictured.
Now that we're finally in autumn, I wanted to showcase how I'm currently wearing my Ralph Lauren shirt. I opted for a slight twist on the classic colour and fit by picking a navy Slim Fit Garment-Dyed Oxford Shirt, I love the deep colour for this time of year. For reference, I'm wearing a size M from the men's casual shirts collection (which means both myself and my boyfriend can wear this shirt!)
Autumn fashion is all about layering, with the ever-changing weather - one minute it's cold and the next minute it's hot - being able to wear and style layers is an essential. When I think about layering, there are some very easy and stylish ways I choose to layer.
The shirt is the focal piece of this outfit, not only is the colour so vibrant and eye-catching (view all blue shirts), it also doubles up as a layering piece too! For warm spells, simply unbutton and wear loosely open over a camisole or a roll neck top and when it gets cold, button it up again for a more put together look.
As an extra layering piece, nothing beats a jumper over the shoulders. There's something about this look that I just love! It's the most perfect finishing touch to a classic outfit like this one and not forgetting its versatility too. Yes, a jumper thrown over the shoulders looks chic but it's also a useful item to have when it starts to get colder as it also looks effortless worn over a shirt with the collar peeking through.
